Since starting our digital history project we have started to investigate the origins of tennis on the Central Coast. It would appear earliest records indicate 1890 as the beginning of lawn tennis, with the first court built during this year at Gosford. This is not too long after tennis was first introduced in the 1870’s as a popular social sport. The first recorded tennis tournament played in Australia was held in January 1880 on the courts of the Melbourne Cricket Club, and the first Australian Open Championships commenced in 1905. There is a rich history of tennis played on the Central Coast and how tennis was a major part of the social fabric of the local community.
